Factor vs. SmashMeals for Celiac Disease — An Honest Comparison

Factor is one of the most popular meal delivery services in America, and they do offer gluten-free labeled meals. But if you have celiac disease, there''s a critical sentence buried in their FAQ that you need to read: Factor states their meals are "produced in a facility that processes eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat." They cannot guarantee their meals are free from cross-contamination.

That is not a knock on Factor — it is simply the reality of operating a large commercial kitchen that serves many dietary needs simultaneously. But for someone with celiac disease, that shared-facility disclaimer changes everything.

SmashMeals in Kingsport, Tennessee is different. We are a 100% dedicated gluten-free commercial kitchen. Wheat has never been in our building. Every meal we make — from 18-hour smoked brisket bowls to breakfast casseroles to desserts — is prepared in a facility where gluten does not exist. Not sometimes. Always.

This post is an honest, side-by-side comparison so you can make the right choice for your health.

Section 1: What Factor Gets Right

Let''s start fair. Factor is a serious operation, and there are real reasons it has become a category leader.

  • Nationwide convenience. Factor ships to all 48 contiguous states with reliable cold-chain logistics. If you live somewhere remote, that infrastructure is real.
  • Large rotating menu. Factor typically lists 30+ entrées per week, with categories for keto, calorie-smart, GLP-1 friendly, protein-plus, and more.
  • Nutritionist-designed meals. Factor''s recipe team builds meals to specific macro targets, which is helpful for customers who eat by the numbers.
  • Good for non-celiac gluten avoidance. If you are gluten-free by preference, by intolerance you can manage with occasional exposure, or for general health, Factor''s gluten-free labeled meals can absolutely be part of your rotation.

This is the customer Factor was built for: someone who wants the convenience of prepared meals, has dietary preferences, and is not managing a clinical condition that punishes a few crumbs of cross-contact.

Section 2: Where Factor Falls Short for Celiac

For celiac patients, the gap between "gluten-free labeled" and "celiac safe" is the entire point.

The shared facility is the issue. Factor''s kitchens process wheat. That means wheat flour is in the air. Wheat-containing ingredients sit on prep lines. Equipment that touched a wheat-based dish at lunch is washed and reused for a gluten-free dish at dinner. In high-volume commercial kitchens, washing alone does not reliably eliminate gluten residue from porous surfaces, wooden tools, or unsealed grout.

The disclaimer is the giveaway. When a company writes "we cannot guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur," they are telling you, in legal language, that their operation cannot meet a celiac standard. Believe them. Companies do not over-disclaim. They under-disclaim, because disclaimers cost sales.

"Gluten-free options" is not the same as "celiac safe." This is the language trap that catches the most families. A meal can be 100% gluten-free in its ingredients and still be unsafe if it was prepped in a kitchen that handles wheat. That is the difference between recipe-level GF and kitchen-level GF.

For people who have lived with celiac for any length of time, this isn''t a theory. It is the explanation for every mystery reaction after a meal you thought was safe.

Section 3: The SmashMeals Difference

SmashMeals operates on a different premise. Instead of a shared kitchen with gluten-free menus, we built a gluten-free kitchen, full stop.

  • 100% dedicated since 2017. Almost a decade of operating as a single-allergen-standard commercial kitchen. Gluten has never entered the building.
  • Every ingredient gluten-free by default. Our soy sauce is tamari. Our pasta is gluten-free. Our breading is gluten-free panko. Our tortillas, cookies, and condiments are gluten-free versions, period. There is no "regular" inventory in the pantry.
  • No shared equipment. Mixers, fryers, smokers, sheet pans, spatulas, cutting boards — every piece of equipment has only ever touched gluten-free food.
  • Direct accountability. SmashMeals is family-run. I am in the kitchen. My son LB runs the meat station. My daughter Daisy runs desserts and the line. You can call us at 423-525-2489 and reach a person who actually cooked your meal.
  • No corporate disclaimer. We do not have legal language at the bottom of our menu hedging our promise. We stake our reputation on it.

This is what "dedicated" actually means. Not a separate prep zone inside a wheat-handling facility. An entire kitchen where wheat does not exist.

For Tri-Cities locals, the math gets even better. Free pickup in Kingsport. Home delivery available across the region. Multiple Grab-and-Go partner locations including Misfits Fitness, iTrain, The Pinnacle in Bristol, and Natural Foods Market.

For national customers — the celiac family in Phoenix or Boston or Minneapolis who cannot find a dedicated GF kitchen near them — we ship FedEx 2-Day for $30 flat, anywhere in the U.S.

Section 5: Who Should Choose Which

This is the honest part.

Choose Factor (or similar national brand) if:

  • You avoid gluten by preference, not medical necessity.
  • You can tolerate occasional cross-contamination without a meaningful health consequence.
  • You value the broadest possible menu variety and don''t mind a subscription model.

Choose SmashMeals if:

  • You have celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, non-celiac gluten sensitivity with significant reactions, or a wheat allergy.
  • You are buying meals for a child or family member with celiac, where a single reaction means days of recovery.
  • You want to eliminate the fine print from your food.
  • You live in the Tri-Cities and want a local kitchen you can drive to.
  • You live elsewhere in the U.S. and cannot find a dedicated GF commercial kitchen near you.

"Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God."Romans 12:2 CSB

Don''t just default to the biggest brand because the ads are everywhere. Read the fine print. Ask the kitchen questions. Your body is worth the extra two minutes.
