KINGSPORT, Tenn., Aug. 17, 2026 — There is a difference between a smaller meal and a lesser one, and it is currently the most important distinction in prepared food.
Adults whose appetite has fallen — on a GLP-1 medication, after bariatric surgery, or simply with age — are being offered two unsatisfying options: a full-size entrée that goes half-eaten into the bin, or a children's portion built around a child's palate. Neither is what they asked for.
What the request actually is
Distilled from the questions arriving by phone and email at the SmashMeals kitchen, the request looks like this:
- A smaller adult portion — same food, less of it
- Protein that is genuinely present, not a garnish beside a large starch
- Macros printed on the label so nothing has to be estimated
- Textures that stay tolerable when appetite is unreliable
- Flavour that belongs to an adult menu
- The ability to order what is needed this week without a subscription commitment
“Nobody calls here asking for a kids' meal,” said Lew Kizer, owner of SmashMeals. “They ask for the same food in a size they can finish.”
Why the distinction matters nutritionally
When intake falls, the composition of what remains determines whether nutrition needs are met. Guidance on nutritional priorities during GLP-1 therapy emphasises protein adequacy and overall diet quality precisely because the volume of food is no longer doing that work.
Children's portions are generally formulated for a child's preferences, which tends to mean a different balance from what an adult eating less actually needs. A smaller adult portion of a protein-forward meal is a different product with a different purpose.
Individual protein targets remain individual. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide the general framework; a prescriber or registered dietitian provides the number.
How SmashMeals is responding
SmashMeals cooks a rotating weekly gluten-free menu that includes à la carte proteins and sides, allowing customers to build a smaller plate from full-flavour adult food rather than downsizing into a different category. Every item is portioned individually and labelled with its macros.
Ordering is per week rather than by mandatory subscription: customers order what they need before the Thursday 11:59 PM Eastern cutoff for destination-dependent delivery. Subscriptions exist as an optional convenience for households that prefer them.
More on the approach: GLP-1 meal support, eating protein-first on a small appetite, and this week's menu.

About SmashMeals
Founded in 2017, SmashMeals is a Kingsport, Tennessee meal prep company cooking in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. Wheat, barley, and rye are not brought into the building, and equipment is not shared with gluten-containing production; a dedicated gluten-free kitchen is not an allergen-free kitchen, so every meal carries its own allergen label. Fulfillment options are free pickup at the Kingsport kitchen and partner Grab & Go locations, $15 home delivery inside the Tri-Cities (Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol), and $30 flat-rate FedEx Ground shipping to eligible addresses. Orders close Thursday 11:59 PM Eastern for destination-dependent delivery.
