Healing Runs on Protein. You Shouldn't Have to Cook to Get It.

Recovery is the one time your body needs more protein than usual — and the one time you can least manage a kitchen. We prepare high-protein, macro-labeled meals you just heat and eat, delivered locally or shipped anywhere in the country. Once your surgical team clears you for real food, we make the hard part easy.

Why Surgeons Talk About Protein

Healthy adults need roughly 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day. After surgery, that need rises substantially — major surgical-nutrition guidelines (ESPEN and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) point to about 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram per day during recovery. For a 150-pound person, that can mean around 100 grams of protein a day, roughly double the usual. The reason is physical: your body uses amino acids to rebuild tissue, form collagen and scar, make the antibodies and immune cells that fend off infection, and hold onto muscle while you're less active. Fall short on protein and healing slows. You can read more on the role of nutrition in healing from Mount Sinai and on general post-op eating from MedlinePlus (NIH).

The catch is that the moment you need the most protein is the moment cooking is hardest. That gap is exactly what ready-to-heat, protein-forward meals close. The full breakdown lives in our guide to how much protein you need after surgery.

A Word From Lew

“When you're recovering, everybody tells you to 'eat plenty of protein' and nobody tells you how you're supposed to cook it with fresh stitches. That's the whole reason this part of our menu exists. You heat it, you eat it, you heal.”

— Lew Kizer, Founder of SmashMeals

Surgery Recovery Meals FAQ

How much protein do you need after surgery?
More than usual. General surgical-nutrition guidelines point to roughly 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day during recovery — about double the everyday recommendation — to support tissue repair, immune function, and muscle preservation. Your exact target depends on your procedure, size, and health, so confirm it with your surgeon or dietitian.
Are SmashMeals good for post-surgery recovery?
Once your surgical team clears you for soft or regular food, yes — our meals are high-protein, individually portioned, and fully macro-labeled, so you can hit your protein target without cooking. They are not for the early liquid or pureed stages; follow your team's plan for those.
Can you deliver meals after surgery to another state?
Yes. We ship to 30 states + DC via FedEx for a flat $30 in insulated cold-pack boxes. Order by Thursday 11:59 PM for Tuesday delivery.
Are the meals easy to eat and digest during recovery?
They're individually portioned and easy to reheat, which helps when your appetite and energy come and go. If your team has texture restrictions (soft-only, low-fiber, and so on), check the menu labels against their guidance first.
Why gluten-free for surgery recovery?
The 100% gluten-free kitchen is a safety guarantee, essential for celiac patients and reassuring for anyone who wants tight ingredient control while healing. It doesn't replace your team's dietary instructions — it works alongside them.
