A Practical Way to Compare Meals After Heart-Health Instructions

Start with the instructions you were given, then compare one actual serving at a time. Check sodium and saturated fat, look for fiber and plant foods, confirm ingredients and allergens, and treat every missing value as unknown. SmashMeals can reduce shopping and cooking, but it cannot decide which meal fits your medical plan.

Medical note: SmashMeals is a prepared-food company, not a medical provider or medically tailored meal service. We do not represent the weekly menu as a therapeutic low-sodium diet. Follow your clinician's written targets and confirm each selected meal when required information is missing.

Bring the Instructions Home in Writing

After a heart-related diagnosis or hospital stay, ask for the targets that apply to you: sodium, saturated fat, fluid, carbohydrates, texture, portion size or anything affected by medication. A general page cannot replace those instructions. Keep the written plan beside the current menu and use the same checklist for every item.

What the Current Guidance Actually Says

The American Heart Association’s 2026 scientific statement emphasizes an overall dietary pattern rather than a single food: vegetables and fruits, mostly whole grains, healthy protein sources, unsaturated fats in place of saturated fats, fewer ultraprocessed foods and added sugars, and lower sodium. The NHLBI DASH plan supplies a structured example, but your care team may set a different target.

This evidence supports a way to evaluate food. It does not show that SmashMeals treats cardiovascular disease, lowers blood pressure or makes every weekly item suitable for a heart-related diet.

A Five-Step Meal Check

  1. Confirm the serving. Read serving size and servings per package before using any nutrient number.
  2. Compare sodium. Use the amount and percent Daily Value on the selected item when available; follow your own target instead of a generic promise.
  3. Compare saturated fat. Look at the actual serving and consider the rest of the day, not just one entrée.
  4. Look beyond two nutrients. The overall pattern also includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fiber and protein sources.
  5. Stop at missing information. “Not listed” is not zero. Check the package label or ask before ordering.

How to Read the Label Without Guessing

The FDA's general label guide says 5% Daily Value or less is low and 20% or more is high. A personal medical target can differ.

What SmashMeals Can and Cannot Do

Prepared meals can reduce the work of shopping, cooking and cleanup. The nutrition and portion guide explains what the current menu preview shows. It does not make the food medically tailored, and the September 24 menu snapshot does not provide verified sodium or saturated-fat amounts for every meal. If a required value cannot be confirmed, choose another item your care team can evaluate.

Heart-Conscious Meal Questions

Are SmashMeals meals low-sodium?
We do not represent the weekly menu as a therapeutic low-sodium diet. Sodium is not verified for every current meal. Confirm the selected item's label against the target supplied by your care team before ordering.
Can I use the total fat number to estimate saturated fat?
No. Total fat does not establish saturated fat. Use the saturated-fat line for the selected serving when it is available; otherwise treat the value as unknown.
Does gluten-free mean a meal is heart-healthy?
No. Gluten-free describes the kitchen and ingredients, not sodium, saturated fat, fiber or a health outcome. Evaluate those facts separately.
What should I do when nutrition values differ by side or portion?
Use the values for the exact option and portion you plan to eat. Do not average two options or use the first number in a description. Ask before ordering if the option is unclear.
Can SmashMeals replace a medically tailored meal program?
No. SmashMeals offers prepared food for direct purchase. It is not medical nutrition therapy and does not provide condition-specific therapeutic diets.
