What to Eat on Every Weight-Loss Drug and Peptide in 2026

New GLP-1 pills, higher doses, drugs still in trials and a wave of peptides: here is what each one is, where it stands with the FDA, and the one thing every one of them has in common. You still have to eat, and what you eat matters.

The quick answer

No food makes a weight-loss medicine or a peptide work, and no medicine replaces eating well. Whatever you are taking, or thinking about, the same food basics apply: lead each meal with protein, keep portions small enough to finish comfortably, drink enough fluids, add fiber as you tolerate it, and do not skip meals just because your appetite is gone. Ready-to-heat meals with labeled macros make that easier on the days you would rather not cook. Your prescriber decides the medicine; you decide what is on the plate.

Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide)

The FDA approved Novo Nordisk's once-daily Wegovy pill for weight management in December 2025, and the company says prescriptions passed three million by June 2026. It is the same medicine as the Wegovy shot, in tablet form.

The food rule that matters: the pill is taken first thing in the morning with no more than four ounces of plain water, and you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other pills. That makes breakfast a planned meal, not a grab-and-go one.

How to eat around it: have a protein-first breakfast ready for when the 30 minutes are up so you are not tempted to skip it. A ready-to-heat protein bowl from your fridge fits that window well. The rest of the day follows the same Wegovy meal plan approach as the shot.

Foundayo (orforglipron)

Eli Lilly's Foundayo became the second GLP-1 pill for weight loss when the FDA approved it on April 1, 2026. Unlike the Wegovy pill, it can be taken any time of day with no food or water restrictions.

How to eat around it: no timing rules does not mean no plan. Appetite still drops, so the risk is under-eating protein and over-relying on snacks. Keep two or three portion-sized, protein-led meals in the fridge so the easy choice is also a good one. Read our full news coverage: Foundayo and food.

Wegovy HD (semaglutide 7.2 mg)

In March 2026 the FDA approved a higher 7.2 mg weekly dose of Wegovy for adults who need more than the standard dose. A bigger dose can mean a smaller appetite, which makes every bite count more.

How to eat around it: think smaller plates, more often, and protein first in each one. Half-portions of a full meal are fine. Our guides on eating with a low appetite and food for GLP-1 side effects cover the practical details.

Older and generic weight-loss medicines

Not everyone is on a newer GLP-1. These FDA-approved options are still widely prescribed, and the food question is just as real:

Coming next: drugs still in trials or under review

These are some of the most searched names in weight loss right now. None of them is FDA-approved today, and you should not buy any of them online. Here is where each stands:

If any of these is approved, the eating basics will look the same: protein first, smaller portions, steady fluids.

Peptides people are searching: BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, Semax, GHK-Cu, NAD+

Searches for "peptide therapy" climbed sharply in 2026, according to market research cited by Glossy, and names like BPC-157, TB-500 and GHK-Cu went from niche to mainstream. Here is what is true right now:

Berberine and "nature's Ozempic"

Berberine is a plant supplement that social media calls "nature's Ozempic." It is not a GLP-1 medicine and it is not FDA-approved to treat anything. Supplements can interact with prescriptions, so check with your pharmacist first. And no supplement replaces regular, protein-led meals.

The one thing every one of these has in common

Every medicine and peptide on this page changes how hungry you are, how much you can eat, or how you have to time it. None of them cooks dinner. When appetite is low, the meals that go wrong are the ones you never planned: skipped breakfast, crackers for lunch, drive-through at night. That is where SmashMeals comes in.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat on the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is taken first thing in the morning with no more than four ounces of plain water, then you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other pills. Plan a protein-first breakfast for when that window ends, then keep the rest of the day to smaller, protein-led meals. Follow your prescriber's instructions.

Does Foundayo (orforglipron) have food restrictions?

Foundayo was approved by the FDA on April 1, 2026 as a once-daily pill that can be taken any time of day without food or water restrictions. Appetite can still drop, so planning protein-led meals ahead of time helps you avoid under-eating.

Is retatrutide FDA-approved?

No. As of October 2026 retatrutide is an investigational drug from Eli Lilly that is still in clinical trials. The FDA says it is not an approved drug and cannot legally be compounded. Do not buy it online.

Are BPC-157 and other peptides legal now?

In July 2026 an FDA advisory committee recommended allowing compounding pharmacies to prepare six peptides, including BPC-157 and TB-500. That recommendation is not binding. The FDA must still act and complete rulemaking before pharmacies can legally compound them. Talk with a licensed clinician before using any peptide.

Is there a special diet for weight-loss drugs or peptides?

No food activates a medicine or a peptide. The same basics apply across all of them: protein at each meal, portions you can finish, enough fluids, fiber as tolerated, and not skipping meals when appetite is low.

How can SmashMeals help while I'm on a weight-loss medicine?

SmashMeals makes ready-to-heat, protein-forward meals with labeled macros in a dedicated 100% gluten-free kitchen in Kingsport, Tennessee. There is no subscription. The meals are food, not treatment, so follow your prescriber's guidance for anything medication-specific.
