Shipped SmashMeals meals are flash-frozen for transit. Local pickup and delivery meals arrive fresh, never frozen. If you want backup dinners, compare the current menu's family dishes and individual meals, then check each selected item's portions, components and storage directions. A family-size listing alone does not establish that every component or container is ready for freezing.

First, know what you will receive
Fulfillment changes how you handle the food when it arrives. Plan for the actual order and the instructions on each package:
- Local pickup or Tri-Cities delivery: meals arrive fresh, never frozen. Check the meal's dates and directions before deciding whether to freeze it at home.
- FedEx shipping: meals are flash-frozen for transit. The eligible address, charge and available fulfillment options are confirmed at checkout. Ask the kitchen how to handle a package that arrives thawed or warmer than expected.
- Family dish or individual meal: either can help with a backup dinner; use the selected listing's stated servings, components and instructions rather than assuming every menu item is the same size.
Orders close Thursday 11:59 PM. Local pickup and delivery meals are fresh, never frozen; shipped meals are flash-frozen for transit. $30 flat-rate FedEx Ground to eligible addresses, plus free local pickup and $15 home delivery in the Tri-Cities (Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol). Transit timing varies by destination and carrier conditions. Read how ordering works before planning a delivery around a particular date.
Check the dish before you clear freezer space
The current ordering menu has family dishes as well as individual meals. A family dish can include a salad, slaw, dressing or another component with different storage needs. Ask which parts can be frozen together and whether the provided package is suitable for that use. A current listing can also differ from a dish you bought previously.
Look at the selected item's description for its serving count and options. A menu category or a photo is not a substitute for a portion label. If the item does not state its yield or a half-size option, ask about that exact dish before planning a set number of servings. For a worked household example, see our family freezer meal planning guide.
Four checks before you order
- Space and equipment: make room for the actual containers, and check whether you have the oven, microwave or other appliance named in the instructions. Do not assume a lid or tray works in both appliances.
- Food and dates: read the use-by or freeze-by date, storage and reheating instructions for each selected meal. Keep the original label with the food.
- Ingredients and allergens: our dedicated gluten-free kitchen does not make every dish free of milk, eggs, nuts or other allergens. Check the current ingredient information and ask about a specific concern before ordering.
- Cost and availability: compare the current item price with its stated servings, then include sides, tax and fulfillment charges shown at checkout. Do not plan around an old price or a dish that is absent from the live menu.
If you are managing a medical diet, a recent surgery or medication-related appetite changes, review the selected meal's current label and portion with your own care team. A gluten-free kitchen and a protein figure do not establish that a dish fits a prescribed diet or recovery stage.
Freezer quality depends on the food and its handling
USDA explains the difference between food safety and quality in the freezer: safely handled food kept continuously at 0°F or below can remain safe while texture and flavor decline. Freezing does not undo earlier mishandling. Lettuce and some sauces may lose quality, so separate components need their own instructions.
For cooked household leftovers, USDA gives 3–4 days in the refrigerator and 3–4 months frozen for best quality. Those are general household guidelines, not a measured shelf life for an unopened SmashMeals package. Follow any shorter product instruction, and ask when the handling history or date is unclear.
Plan the thaw and reheat
Follow the specific meal's directions. USDA describes refrigerator thawing as a safe method and recommends reheating cooked leftovers to 165°F with a food thermometer. Tray size and appliance affect the time, so a universal heating time is unreliable. Do not thaw on the counter. If you are unsure how to handle a partially thawed delivery, contact SmashMeals with the item and arrival details.
Find the right option on the current menu
Choose the number of meals you can receive and store comfortably. View the live SmashMeals menu for available family dishes, individual meals, options and prices. Check the item-specific directions and checkout details before placing the order. If the listing does not answer a freezer, serving or allergen question, ask us about that meal.

How ordering works
- 1. Pick your meals Browse the menu that's live this week and choose what you want. Subscriptions are optional — order one week, every week, or whenever you need it.
- 2. Choose how you get them Free pickup at our Kingsport kitchen and Grab & Go partners, $15 home delivery in the Tri-Cities, or $30 flat-rate FedEx Ground for eligible addresses. Orders close Thursday 11:59 PM Eastern.
- 3. Heat and eat Meals are fully cooked and ready to heat. Local pickup and delivery meals arrive fresh, never frozen; shipped meals are flash-frozen for transit. Follow each item's storage and reheating directions.
- Dedicated gluten-free kitchen — We do not bring wheat, barley, or rye into the building and we do not share equipment with gluten-containing production. A dedicated gluten-free facility is not an allergen-free facility — check each label for other allergens.
- Transparent nutrition — Many current menu listings include calories and macros. Check each selected meal's label and ask for any ingredient or nutrient detail you need to make a choice.
- Cooked in Kingsport since 2017 — Founder-run production kitchen at 1917 Meadowview Parkway, Kingsport, TN — the same kitchen for local pickup, local delivery, and shipped orders.
Freezer meal questions
- Do local SmashMeals orders arrive frozen?
- No. Local pickup and Tri-Cities delivery meals arrive fresh, never frozen. Shipped orders are flash-frozen for transit. Follow each selected meal's directions if you plan to freeze a fresh meal after receiving it.
- Is every family dish ready to freeze as delivered?
- Do not assume so. A family dish can include salad, slaw, dressing or another component with different storage needs. Check its current listing and ask which components and containers can be frozen.
- How long can I keep a SmashMeals meal in the freezer?
- Use the selected meal's dated label and storage directions. USDA's 3–4 month quality guidance applies generally to cooked household leftovers; it does not establish a tested shelf life for every unopened SmashMeals meal. Ask the kitchen if the label or handling history is unclear.
- Can I put every meal tray in the oven or microwave?
- Check the selected package's heating instructions and lid material. Do not assume a tray or lid is suitable for both appliances. Ask before heating a package without clear directions.
- Do you offer a half-size family tray?
- Only rely on the sizes and options shown for the current item in the ordering menu. If a half-size or serving count is not listed, contact SmashMeals about the specific dish before ordering.
- Do gluten-free freezer meals fit bariatric or other medical diets?
- A dedicated gluten-free kitchen does not establish suitability for a medical diet or a post-surgery stage. Check the current ingredients, portions and nutrients for the selected meal with your own care team. Ask the kitchen for any missing label or allergen details.
