Some Medicare Advantage plans offer a short-term post-discharge meal benefit — commonly a limited number of meals over a few weeks after an inpatient stay — and some offer broader supplemental meal benefits for members who qualify. What the benefit usually looks like when it exists
Post-discharge meals. A defined number of meals delivered over a set window following an inpatient hospital or skilled nursing stay, typically arranged by the plan's care management team.
Chronic-condition supplemental benefits. Some plans offer meals to members with qualifying chronic conditions under special supplemental benefit rules. Eligibility is set by the plan, not by the member.
A plan-selected vendor. Where a meal benefit exists, the plan almost always fulfills it through vendors it has contracted. That is why we say plainly: choosing SmashMeals is a separate, direct-pay decision unless a plan contracts with us.
How to check your own plan in about ten minutes
Find your Evidence of Coverage (EOC) or Summary of Benefits — mailed each fall and posted in your plan's member portal.
Search it for "meals", "nutrition", or "supplemental benefits".
Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask: is there a meal benefit on my plan this year, does it require a hospital discharge, how many meals, over how many days, which vendors, and does it need prior authorization?
Write down the answer and the call reference number.
If you have a case manager or care coordinator, ask them the same questions — they usually know faster.

Can I use a Medicare Advantage flex or OTC card for SmashMeals?
Some plans issue flexible spending or grocery cards with their own rules about where they can be used. Whether a card works for a prepared-meal purchase is set by the plan and the card administrator, so ask them before ordering.
What if my plan has no meal benefit?
You can still order directly. Pickup is free, local Tri-Cities home delivery is $15, and shipping is a $30 flat rate. There is no subscription and no minimum order.
