Meals After Hospital Discharge: Compare With Your Instructions

Coming home can make shopping and cooking difficult. If the discharge plan allows ordinary prepared food, compare each current meal with its food and texture instructions before ordering. SmashMeals is prepared food, not a prescribed recovery diet.

Start with the discharge plan

The plan should say what foods and liquids are allowed, what to avoid, and whom to call. MedlinePlus's discharge checklist asks patients and caregivers to understand food instructions. AHRQ's discharge guide asks what to eat and avoid. Neither source evaluates SmashMeals.

Compare before ordering

  1. Confirm an ordinary solid entree matches the allowed food form; a liquid, puréed, soft-only or swallowing plan may rule it out.
  2. Compare posted serving amount and nutrition with the written plan; a package is not necessarily a prescribed portion.
  3. Check ingredients and allergens when available. Sodium, fiber, saturated fat or other required values may be absent. Do not infer them from macros; ask about the exact item.
  4. Check current menu availability, final price and fulfillment for the recipient's address. Arrange an immediate meal plan separately if delivery timing is uncertain.

For example, a caregiver with a written sodium limit cannot assess an item from protein or calories when sodium is unlisted. Ask before buying. Prepared meals reduce cooking work but do not replace clinical care, a discharge planner, or a medically tailored program.

View current menu and prices in the ordering site; checkout confirms fulfillment for the address. Ask SmashMeals about missing item details. See the nutrition information FAQ, delivery details, and related discharge guide.

Sources and limits

MedlinePlus discharge plan (reviewed July 15, 2024) is patient guidance; AHRQ's guide (last reviewed November 2020) is a discharge discussion tool. Neither tests these meals or establishes an individual's diet.

Frequently asked questions

Can meals arrive on the day someone leaves the hospital?
Do not plan around a guaranteed discharge-day arrival. Check the live menu and checkout for the recipient's address, current order cutoff, price and fulfillment options. Arrange food for the first day separately if delivery timing is uncertain.
Are these meals suitable for a cardiac, kidney or diabetes plan?
There is no blanket yes. Compare each item with the person's written food instructions. If a needed sodium, carbohydrate, saturated fat, fluid, portion or other value is missing, treat it as unknown and ask the care team and SmashMeals before ordering.
What if the discharge plan calls for soft, puréed or thickened food?
An ordinary prepared entree is not a prescribed texture-modified meal. Follow the exact food and liquid texture instructions from the care team, including any swallowing guidance, and do not substitute a standard meal without its approval.
Can I order for a family member at another address?
Use the live checkout to confirm that the recipient's address is eligible and see available fulfillment. Coordinate a person to receive, store and reheat the food according to package instructions. Do not assume delivery will match a changing discharge date.
What if an ingredient, allergen or required nutrient is not listed?
Treat the missing detail as unknown. Calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat do not establish sodium, fiber, saturated fat, ingredients or allergen status. Ask about the exact item before ordering when a restriction depends on it.
Does insurance cover these meals?
The regular ordering menu is a direct purchase. If the person's plan includes a meal benefit, check eligibility and authorization with the plan; see the separate coverage guide for questions to ask. A hospital discharge alone does not establish coverage.
