Count the adults eating, choose the meal occasions that would actually help, multiply by the uncovered days, then subtract food already in the freezer and meals already scheduled. Check freezer capacity, recipient preferences, receiving, reheating, and every exact item fact the household needs before ordering.

Medical note: This is a household food-planning tool for adults, not postpartum, breastfeeding, infant-feeding, medical, or nutrition advice. SmashMeals provides prepared food for convenience, not medical nutrition therapy. Follow the family's clinicians for individual care.
| Input | What to count |
|---|---|
| Adults eating | Count the adults the food is meant to support; do not include the baby in this prepared-adult-meal calculation. |
| Useful meal occasions per day | Count only the breakfasts, lunches, dinners, or other adult meal occasions the household wants covered. |
| Uncovered days | Count the days without another meal, visitor, takeout plan, or household cooking plan. |
| Food already available | Count usable adult meal portions already in the freezer or refrigerator. |
| Meals already scheduled | Count confirmed portions from friends, family, a meal calendar, or another service. |
Planning formula: adults × useful meal occasions per day × uncovered days, minus usable portions already available and confirmed portions already scheduled. Stop at the amount that fits the household's real storage and routine.
Worked example, not a recommendation: two adults × one useful meal occasion × four uncovered days equals eight adult meal slots. If two appropriate portions are already scheduled, six meal slots remain. A meal slot is not automatically one SmashMeals item; verify current serving information and household needs before choosing a quantity.
USDA MyPlate meal-planning guidance recommends checking the freezer, cabinets, and refrigerator; writing down the week’s meals; thinking about time; and using a mix of fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable foods. This page applies that general planning approach to new-parent household coverage. It is not evidence that SmashMeals improves postpartum health, breastfeeding, infant feeding, or any clinical outcome.
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says food held continuously at 0°F remains safe while quality can decline, and thawed food must still be handled as perishable food. That general guidance does not establish that a particular SmashMeals item should be frozen, how long its quality will last, or how it should be thawed or reheated.
Follow the current item and package directions. If item-specific freezing, storage, thawing, or reheating instructions are not available, treat the handling method as unknown and contact SmashMeals before relying on it for freezer coverage. Do not invent a shelf life from a general USDA chart.
The live SmashMeals menu and checkout—not this guide—are authoritative for current items, availability, price, eligible destination, fulfillment options, charges, and timing.
Meal-level ingredients, complete allergen details, sodium, saturated fat, fiber, serving weight, portion information, and item-specific handling must come from an authoritative current item record. If a needed fact is not shown, treat it as unknown rather than zero and contact SmashMeals before ordering. Calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fat alone do not establish a medical-diet, allergy, portion, postpartum, breastfeeding, or food-safety fit.
This calculator is only for prepared meals intended for adults in the household. It does not recommend food, formula, milk, feeding timing, or portion sizes for a baby. Use the infant's clinician and current public-health guidance for infant-feeding questions.
| Situation | Best next page |
|---|---|
| Planning freezer coverage for your own household before the baby arrives | Use this calculator, then verify exact current items and freezer directions before checkout. |
| Sending one small order to new parents | Use the one-meal recipient checklist to confirm the people, meal occasion, address, storage, and receiving plan. |
| Coordinating several days or several helpers | Use the week-coverage planner and assign dates before anyone orders. |
| Comparing the broader prepared-meal service for a new-parent household | Use the pre-baby meal service page after the household's needs and restrictions are known. |
| A medical diet, allergy, texture, or missing item fact matters | Follow the care instructions and contact SmashMeals; do not use a page title as evidence of suitability. |
Go to the one-meal recipient checklist, the week-coverage planner, or the broader pre-baby meal service page when one of those jobs fits better.
SmashMeals cooks in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. That facility fact is not an allergen-free or medically tailored guarantee. Review the exact item information available for the household’s other allergen or dietary needs and see the Trust Center for the kitchen standard.
