Where the real number comes from

In pounds, 1.6 g/kg works out to roughly 0.73 g per pound. For a 180-pound person, that's about 131 grams a day — not the 180 grams the popular rule demands.
So where did "1 gram per pound" come from?
Do the conversion: 1 g/lb equals about 2.2 g/kg. That's the very top of the evidence range — the outer edge of the confidence interval, not the center of the finding.
It survived because it's memorable. A round number you can compute in your head beats a decimal multiplier every time, and bodybuilding culture has favored erring high for decades. That's a reasonable heuristic, not a research finding.
For a lean, hard-training lifter deliberately aiming for the ceiling — especially in a calorie deficit, where protein needs rise — 1 g/lb is defensible. For most people it's more protein than needed, it crowds out other foods, and, most importantly, it sets a bar so high that missing it feels like failing.

- Morton's 1.6 g/kg breakpoint was a statistical breakpoint, not a hard cutoff. Nothing stops working at 1.61.
- Some researchers argue well-trained lifters may benefit from the upper end or slightly beyond, particularly while cutting.
- Older adults need more protein per meal to trigger the same muscle-building response, so per-meal distribution matters as much as the daily total for them.
- In a calorie deficit, higher protein helps preserve muscle and blunt hunger — a good reason to sit toward the top of the range.
The honest takeaway: 1.6 g/kg is a well-supported target for most people; up to about 2.2 g/kg is reasonable for dedicated lifters; precision beyond that has diminishing returns.
The lever that actually matters: consistency
Here's the part nobody argues about. The difference between people who build and hold muscle almost never comes down to 1.6 versus 2.2 g/kg. It comes down to hitting their protein every day versus hitting it three days a week and forgetting on the other four.
Weekly average is what your body responds to. A perfect Monday plus a 40-gram Thursday averages out worse than a solid, unremarkable number every single day.
