Among DEKA's formats — STRONG's ten zones without running, MILE's mile, FIT's 5K and Ultra's fifty zones plus 25K — ATLAS is defined by heavier loading and a 30-minute time cap. Nothing about a half-hour capped event creates a fuelling problem.
What it does create is a loading problem. Heavy work under time pressure means high intra-abdominal pressure, heavy breathing and awkward positions — all of which are made worse by a full stomach. The eating decision is about comfort and readiness, not energy supply.
The relevant evidence is about building the athlete, not fuelling the event. The ISSN position stand on protein and exercise puts roughly 1.4–2.0 g per kg of body weight per day as sufficient for most exercising people, and Morton and colleagues' meta-analysis found added protein improves strength and lean-mass outcomes from resistance training, levelling off near 1.6 g/kg/day.

How strong is this evidence? There is no research on capped heavy-zone events. The protein evidence is drawn from general resistance-training populations and applied on the reasonable assumption that ATLAS is a strength event.
