Meal Prep When You Are Newly Single

Build a manageable food routine for one household after a breakup, separation or another change. Start with the meals you need this week, the storage you have and a budget that fits.

Plan for the household you have this week

If you used to shop or cook with someone else, the old quantities may no longer fit. Count only the meals you want covered at your current address. If children are with you on some days, make a separate headcount for those days. You do not need to explain your situation to order food.

Try a small meal map before a big grocery reset

Write down three categories: meals you still enjoy cooking, meals you usually eat elsewhere, and meals that need a backup. For example, two work lunches and three dinners create five meal occasions. That is an example, not a package requirement. Check serving sizes and add the breakfasts, snacks and other foods you normally eat.

Give each prepared meal a job. Reserve the work lunches separately so a late dinner does not use tomorrow's lunch. Check what went uneaten before the next order. Our meals-for-one guide covers ongoing solo planning; this page focuses on rebuilding the routine after a change.

Keep the first order within your real budget

Compare current food prices plus fulfillment and tax with the meals you would otherwise buy. Prepared food may cost more than groceries you cook yourself. Do not increase the order merely to reduce shipping per meal if it creates unwanted food or financial pressure.

A different kitchen may need a different plan

Check refrigerator and freezer space, available heating equipment, and who can receive a shipment. If staying temporarily with family or in a hotel, ask before sending a box. Confirm the full destination in checkout and review shipping eligibility.

Help without making someone explain

If buying for a newly single friend, ask whether food would be useful and let them choose dishes and timing. Avoid a surprise perishable shipment. Our meal-gifting guide is a starting point. If the household changed because someone died, the sympathy guide addresses that different situation. Food can reduce a task; it is not a treatment for grief or distress.

Frequently asked questions

Is this only for people going through divorce?

No. It is for someone adjusting food quantities, schedules or responsibilities after a household change. You do not need to share personal details.

Should I buy a whole week immediately?

Start with the specific meals you want help covering and the storage available. Review what you actually used before repeating or expanding the order.

Can I send meals to a friend after a breakup?

Ask first, confirm preferences and address eligibility, and arrange receiving. Let the recipient choose whether food is helpful.
