Are Chattanooga's Ozempic & Wegovy Users Getting Enough Protein? What You Need to Know

A new study shows GLP-1 medication users are eating critically low protein and skipping meals. Here's what Chattanooga residents on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro need to eat — and how Smash Meals makes it easy.

If you or someone you love is taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound — this is one of the most important things you'll read this year. A major new study is sounding the alarm, and it directly affects people right here in the Chattanooga area.

Let me be straight with you. I'm Lew Kizer — pastor, pitmaster, and founder of Smash Meals. I've spent seven years feeding people in this community. And when I see research that affects the health of our neighbors, I feel called to talk about it plainly.

So here it is: people on GLP-1 weight-loss medications are eating critically low amounts of protein, skipping meals, and putting their long-term health at serious risk — even as they lose weight.

⚠️ New Study: Research set to be presented at the European Congress on Obesity found that GLP-1 medication users eat a "critically low" amount of protein and are significantly more likely to skip breakfast, lunch, and dinner than non-users — reducing opportunities to get adequate nutrition throughout the day. Lead researcher Valentina Vinelli called it an "urgent need for proactive nutritional monitoring."

What Is a GLP-1 Medication — and Why Does This Matter?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1 — a hormone your body naturally produces. Medications like Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide) mimic this hormone. They slow digestion, regulate blood sugar, and tell your brain you're full — often for hours at a time.

The results for weight loss can be remarkable. But here's the problem nobody warns you about: when your appetite drops that dramatically, it's incredibly easy to under-eat — especially protein.

And protein isn't optional. It's what keeps your muscle on your body while you lose fat. Without enough of it, you can lose the weight and the muscle right along with it, leaving you weaker, more fatigued, and with a slower metabolism than when you started.

"Protecting muscle mass should be a central goal of any weight-loss program." — Valentina Vinelli, IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Milan

How Much Protein Do GLP-1 Users Actually Need?

Here's something that surprised even health-conscious folks: the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans just updated the recommended protein intake — raising it from 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight all the way up to 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram per day.

For someone on a GLP-1, nutrition experts recommend hitting at least 25–35 grams of protein at each meal, with a daily target of 80–120+ grams. That's a lot — especially when you're barely hungry enough to finish a small plate.

Your Body Weight Min. Daily Protein (1.2g/kg) Target Daily Protein (1.5g/kg)
150 lbs (68 kg) 82g 102g
175 lbs (79 kg) 95g 119g
200 lbs (91 kg) 109g 136g
225 lbs (102 kg) 122g 153g
250 lbs (113 kg) 136g 170g

Most GLP-1 users in the new study weren't coming close to these numbers. They were skipping meals and, when they did eat, choosing whatever felt easiest — not what was most nutritious.

⚠️ Watch Out for "GLP-1 Friendly" Labels: Major food companies like Nestlé and Conagra are now slapping "GLP-1 Friendly" labels on packaged meals. But NPR's reporting found that one popular frozen option had just 3 grams of fiber — far below the 25 grams recommended daily — and was loaded with preservatives and stabilizers. As one nutritionist put it: "There is absolutely no regulated or medically defined standard — the labels are just marketing." Your best bet is real, freshly prepared food.

What Should Someone on a GLP-1 Actually Eat?

The Mayo Clinic Diet, the American Heart Association, and independent dietitians all point to the same principles for GLP-1 users:

  • 25–35g protein per meal, eaten first before other foods
  • 3–5 smaller meals spread through the day, never skip
  • 25g+ fiber daily to prevent constipation (a common side effect)
  • 80–120g total daily protein minimum for muscle preservation

The key foods: lean chicken and turkey, eggs and egg whites, Greek yogurt, shrimp and fish, lean beef, cottage cheese, and high-fiber vegetables. Less processed food, less sugar, more whole real ingredients.

Sounds simple. But when you're busy, barely hungry, and exhausted — cooking a nutritionally balanced, high-protein meal three to five times a day is genuinely hard. That's where meal prep changes everything.

Why Meal Prep Is the #1 Strategy for GLP-1 Users

When your appetite is suppressed and unpredictable, you can't rely on hunger to remind you to eat right. You need food that is already done, already portioned, and already nutritious — ready the moment your window opens.

This is why national meal prep services like Factor have built entire GLP-1 meal lines. And it's why right here in Chattanooga, Smash Meals has been doing exactly this for seven years — long before Ozempic was a household name.
