Your First HYROX: A Plain Nutrition Guide

For a first HYROX, three things do almost all the work: eat enough overall while you train, get adequate protein spread across the day, and rehearse your race-morning meal before a hard session. Everything else — timing tricks, supplements, carbohydrate protocols — is small detail compared with finishing a format you have not done before.

How should I eat for my first HYROX? For a first HYROX, three things do almost all the work: eat enough overall while you train, get adequate protein spread across the day, and rehearse your race-morning meal before a hard session. Everything else — timing tricks, supplements, carbohydrate protocols — is small detail compared with finishing a format you have not done before.

What a first-timer is actually walking into

HYROX publishes one fixed format: eight 1 km runs alternating with eight workout stations, so every athlete covers 8 km of running plus 8 stations. For a first-timer the running total is usually the surprise: 8 km is a real amount of running, and it is broken up by stations that make each subsequent kilometre feel worse than the last. Most first races take longer than people expect, which means the day is an endurance event with strength interruptions, not a gym workout.

Because of that, the biggest nutritional risks for a first race are under-eating in training, arriving with low carbohydrate availability, and trying something novel on the day. None of those require expertise to avoid.

What the evidence says

Protein is the part with the clearest numbers. The ISSN position stand concludes roughly 1.4–2.0 g per kg of body weight per day is sufficient for most exercising people, and Morton and colleagues found added protein's benefit levelling off near 1.6 g/kg/day in pooled resistance-training data.

On fuelling, the contemporary carbohydrate review and the 2026 consensus discussion both support adequate carbohydrate availability scaled to the demand of the event, which for a first HYROX means "eat properly", not "follow a marathon loading protocol".

How strong is this evidence? There is no beginner-specific HYROX nutrition literature at all. The advice here is deliberately conservative general sports nutrition, because for a first race the gains come from not making mistakes rather than from optimisation.

Where gluten-free actually fits

Our kitchen is 100% dedicated gluten-free because some people need it to be — coeliac disease, diagnosed gluten sensitivity, or a household that simply eats gluten-free. Removing gluten is not a performance strategy in itself, and there is no good evidence it improves output, recovery or inflammation in athletes without a medical reason. For a first race the honest framing is: if you eat gluten-free, our kitchen removes a logistical headache. If you do not, choosing gluten-free food will not make you faster.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need supplements for my first HYROX?
No. Nothing on a supplement shelf compensates for under-eating during the training block, and race week is the worst possible time to trial anything new.
How much protein do I actually need?
Published guidance puts roughly 1.4–2.0 g per kg of body weight per day as sufficient for most exercising people. Spreading it across meals is more practical than chasing an exact figure.
Should I lose weight before my first race?
We do not give weight-loss or cutting protocols, and a first race is a poor time to be in a deficit. If body composition is a goal, work with a qualified dietitian and keep it away from race week.
What is the most common first-timer nutrition mistake?
Eating something unfamiliar on race morning, closely followed by not eating enough during the training block.
Do I need to eat during the race?
Most first-timers finish in a timeframe where in-race feeding is not the limiting factor. If you want to test something, test it in a full simulation first.
